HHHTowards the Right (Geographically, not politically),

In the last decade, the once dominant East Coast (Home of everyone from De La Soul to the Notorious B.I.G., the Juice Crew to the Wu-Tang Clan) have struggled to stay on top of the rap food chain as their necessity for cadence and concept has been dwarfed by the Souths ever infectious ‘Bounce’ and ‘Hook’ approach.  And well, while living legends Jay-Z and Nas still continue to dominate whenever they appear, the notion of a new East Coast dynasty remains myth like Lebron’s Championship ring.

However, as an over obsessive rap Stan, I’ve noticed something this year that has somehow slipped under the mainstream media’s radar…THE EAST IS BACK! Now I won’t go so far as to say a new Dynasty is on the horizon because quite frankly, outside of a handful of artists, the East is still selling less than the South.  But for those who just love themselves some East Coast ish, 2009’s been good to you!

Lemme break it down:

  • Jadakiss pushed 100,000 his first week.
  • Mos Def had in my opinion (and Diddy’s apparently), the best album of the year – PRETTY DANCER’S MY SHIT!
  • Fabolous, although coming with less than stellar singles, actually had his best album yet (check Pachanga).
  • Wu-Tang CAME (and left again).
  • De La Soul celebrated their 20th anniversary with an incredible tour (yes I was there and yes it was the best I’ve ever seen them).
  • Busta stayed relevant.
  • Q-Tip released (and re-released) 2 ridiculous records!
  • Drake is hotter than fresh caca outta Dumbo.
  • Slaughterhouse’s Joe Budden and Joell Ortiz continue to spit crazy bars.
  • KRS-One and Buckshot proved they can still punch with the best of’em.
  • Meth & Red stayed INTERNATIONAL!
  • Raekwon & Ghost both released excellent albums as well as confirmed an upcoming trio record with Meth.
  • And finally, Jay came back and made up for that black eye known as Kingdom Come.

Well, to add to this nice list of 2009 accomplishments, how bout a few more goodies that slid across my desktop this past week (and a few that came out during the HHHT hiatus).

HOV’ WITH ONE OF THE BEST COMMERCIALS EVER!

HHHTwins,

Throughout the history of music there’ve been an abundance of amazing duos.  From Eric B. & Rakim to Simon & Garfunkel to Rick James & Eddie Murphy (CLAAASSIC!) it seems that the nature of pairing 2 equally skilled artists together can have an incredibly positive and progressive effect on the quality of the end product.  Whether it be because of some intangible chemistry or simply because both artists are doing their best not to be outshone by the other, at very least, duos always give us something to talk about.  Well, to continue and contribute to this pattern, here’s a post about a few more new and old classic pairings.

DEF & DOOM

What do you get when you take 2 of Hip-Hop’s most beloved and influential lyricists, both of whom were at one time themselves part of other classic pairings (Black Star & KMD respectively) and you put’em together?

Well…I don’t actually know.  But I assume it’d be madness.

Just recently leaked was this youtube footage of Mos Def and what sounds like DOOM behind the camera spitting some potentially new co-written material.  As of now, these 2 have never officially released any songs together, but after seeing this, it might be okay to start getting your hopes up.

And if you didn’t see the initial video, this is Mos speaking on the dopeness of DOOM and touching on the genius of De La.

**BONUS DL – LEE WILSON Feat. MOS DEF – SOUL KISS**

GHOSTFACE and…

Ghostface has been part of his share of classic pairings.  Whether it be himself and the aforementioned DOOM, or with long time Clan member, Raekwon (who he’ll be releasing an album with alongside the rejuvenated Method Manif you didn’t cop Blackout!2, you need to.), Ghost rarely, if ever, falters on a verse and any rap fan who breathes oxygen knows this.

Well although this isn’t actually a pairing, here’s a clip of Ghost talking about the late-O.D.B. and just what he meant when he said ‘Oooh Baby I like it RAAAW!’

**BONUS DL – GHOSTFACE feat. FABOLOUS – 2DOPE**

UTTER THE SUN

And last but definitely not least, the HHHT World Premiere of Toronto-based duo MAGNOLIUS‘ brand new video – Utter the Sun.

These guys are a problem.  Stay tuned.

MAGNOLIUS – UTTER THE SUN (MPFREE)

That’s the jam.

HHHTerrorists,

I know it’s Sunday.

And I know this is generally your day of rest….but I just couldn’t wait another day to give you this sneak peek.

You know how as a kid you used to make up fantasy posse cuts?   Like I know in my circle we’d come up with combinations like Pharoahe Monch, Del and Big Boi, or Black Thought, Aesop Rock and Kurupt.  Y’know, ish like that.  Hell, N.E.R.D. actually did one of mine when they put together De La, Q-Tip, Mos and Common for their She Wants to Move remix.  Well….how bout this one.

Raekwon – Ill Figures Feat. M.O.P. and Kool G Rap (sorry it’s the Clean version.  I’m working on gettin the DIRTY!)

And as a bonus, the Ante Up (Remix) roster returns with another offering.

M.O.P. – Blow the Horns feat. Busta Rhymes (Dirty)

And to continue with the theme, Raekwon just released video version #2 of the New Wu track featuring Meth and Ghost.  I’m not sure why he did another version cause Ghost isn’t even in it, plus the RZA cameo (as well as a ton of others) isn’t there.  Instead they grabbed cameos from cats like Teyana Taylor?   Oh well….the tune’s still heavy.

Finally, on a completely unrelated note…..courtesy the homie Rewind from The Intelligentlemen….

So pitted.

Enjoy the day people.  Soak it up.

HHHTriumphant,

I think I’m a touch late on the New Release Tuesday, but at very least it’s still Tuesday where I’m at so enjoy the goodies.

I’m in a bit of a rush though so this’ll be another Post Up and Pop Out.

TWO FULL MIXTAPES for your listening pleasure.

First up, Mr. Bus-a-Bus with his B.O.M.B. prequel ‘I Bullshit You Not’.

Full of the 12 albums worth of leaks he’s been dropping this past little while.  It promises to have half WOO-HOO and half DOO-DOO….at least that’s my guess.  You tell me.

Next we have something that I’m very excited for….the Cheech & Chong of rap, Meth & Red’s Lights Out!  A compilation of old and new and well, from what I’ve heard thus far :) …..well, I’ll let you decide.  Shouts to Saukrates for holdin down T.O. on the first single.  I enjoy it muchly.

Finally, a guy who hasn’t consistantly rocked my neck but yet I consistantly support (and still made one of my top 20 albums of all time) Dizzee Rascal returns with the help of Armand Van Helden to bring you some visual and aural rocks!

It’s Tuesday (or Wednesday) folk, save a cat.

Word up.

After the buckets of views yesterday,  I can only presume that Joe Russo is what y’all want.

So as promised….part deux.

And Dammit if it ain’t new Release Tuesday.

I got them yum yums for your EARea.

First up, Mr. Rhymes on his ol’ skool hip-hop ISH!  A KRS sample?!  Word up.  Haven’t heard someone rock one of those in awhile (which I don’t completely understand cause his samples are FREE and he’s oh so quote worthy).  If I didn’t know better, B.O.M.B.’s on the waaaaay.

Busta Rhymes – Wack (click flick for dl)

“CAM’RON IS BACK!!”

Now generally hearing that statement, I’d be underwhelmed to say the least.  I’m a fan of like 6 songs and a handful of guest verses in his 11 year existance and most of those songs occurred in the first half of his run.  That being said, I like this new tune a LOT!  Cam goes left on this one and does a ‘Working Class’ song?!? No Poppin Champagne for this Dipset General…no sir.

Cam’ron – I Hate My Job (click flick for dl)

And finally, as a special treat FREEBASS808.  At first I wasn’t too sure who they were but they sounded dope and the emcee sounded a lot like the Geechie Gracious (he be sippin armaretto)….well turns out…it IS!  A new solo project between Camp Lo’s Geechi Suede (a.k.a. Suede Heron) and producer Apple Juice Kid (a.k.a. Apple Crack)…the clip is short but promising (Cap I think you’ll likey).

FREEBASS808 – Morphing (click flick for dl)

*Bonus – Raekwon feat. Ghostface & Method Man – Wu Ohh (High Quality)* - the Untitled song from yesterday.

Sofakinglater is in 3 days people!
Next HHHT event to be announced in a matter of days…stay tuned.

As in 2 days left!! Im gonna take a bite out of Triple’s steez here for the ladies. Seeing as how we have 2 days left ’til HHHT Vol.2 Backroom madness @ Deep Passion this Friday, just in case you don’t know. Its only fitting that you get blessed with a couple (times 2) great duets.

First off we’re going back to the classics, Marvin Gaye featuring Tammi Terrell. With ‘Your all I need to get by’

Now if your digging the song, I got it for your ipod or iphone right here

As a bonus, Im sure most of you are more familiar with the Method Man & Mary J version of this song. When this came out a bunch of dudes starting calling their girls ‘Shorty’ and ‘Boo’. Meth’s swag is pretty mean in this video too. I’m sure it inspired some thug ambitions in many a young rider at the time.

Need it for the ipod. Here ya go

On to other inspirational things. When D’angelo (pronounced Dee-Angelo, for those who don’t know) first dropped. His album definitely inspired the R&B thug in most of us. A dude with corn rows singing all pretty and shit?!! Yeah word. His first album Brown Sugar is great and his 2nd LP ‘Voodoo’ produced by the Soulquarians has glimpses of genius on it. It was also the last album he released before getting fat and going a little crazy.

Anyways D’ang tapped DJ Premier for a remix for his ode to the fairer sex. Here’s the vid featuring AZ on the mic and a few beautiful ladies for eye candy. Joi (Big Gipp from Goodie Mob’s wife), Faith Evans (Biggie’s ex) and Erykah Badu when she had just jumped on the scene and was with Andre 3000, before moving on to Common and now she’s with Jay Electronica. She definitely got some magic between her thighs!!!

Track here

Its hard to only post 2 duets, but while on the topic of D’angelo duets, here is one that he did on the classic Lauryn Hill album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’

CAP

So, during my search yesterday for six 6-artist posse cuts, I realized one thing…there are A LOT more 5-emcee posse cuts then there are six (the majority of which include Busta Rhymes).  I also realized that the West Coast generally don’t do posse cuts unless it includes EVERYONE from the west.

Anyways…since yesterday was so much fun, I thought I’d do it again.

Five Classic 5-Man Posse Cuts (in no particular order — and I’ve done my best not to include Busta in all of’em):

1.  A Tribe Called Quest – Scenario

Predictable?  Yes…but I had to.  A Tribe Called Quest…Leaders of the New School…you know the rest.

2.  Dungeon Family – Trans DF Express

One of the most ridiculous collections of talent the world has ever seen.  Somehow Outkast, Goodie Mob, Witchdoctor, Cool Breeze, Slimm Calhoun, Bubba Sparxx, Sleepy Brown, Rico Wade, Mr. DJ and affiliates sold WOOD with their only group album, ‘Even in Darkness’.  The weird thing is, I have yet to meet anyone who didn’t love this album.  And with cuts like Six Minutes, Follow the Light, Crooked Booty and especially since it came hot off the heels of Stankonia’s destruction, I can’t figure out why this didn’t get a bigger push.  Check out EVERYONE molest this track……..grab your ticket….

3.  Kardinal Offishall Feat. IRS & Jully Black – Ol’ Time Killin’

After 3 years of being on Canadian college radio, it’s programmed in my blood to include Cancon (Governement regulated Canadian Content).  And well, I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes it was a struggle to find Canadian tunes that were air worthy, this one here will tear down any club in Toronto for good reason.  Directed by Brampton-native and Hype Williams protege, Lil X….this is that stuff….

4.  Master P feat. Fiend, Silkk the Shocker, Mia X & Mystikal – Make’em Say Ungh

This song belongs in the dictionary as the third definition for Contemporary Southern American Urban Music.  Just try NOT punching someone in the face while you listen to this…I couldn’t do it.  Sorry Charles.

5.  B-Real, Coolio, Method Man, LL Cool J & Busta Rhymes – Hit’em High

There were so many options for this last spot, but I picked this song strictly for nostalgic reasons (plus  Flava In Ya Ear is still played regularly on MTV).

I love this song.

*BONUS VID*

The Luniz Feat. Dru Down, Shock G, Spice 1, E-40, Richie Rich & Cap’n Sav’em – I Got 5 On It (Remix)

Not a 5 man posse cut but a classic nonetheless, plus it’s the title of this post and the only way I could get the West properly represented.
