HHHTired,

It’s Father’s day.  And for pops, I’m gonna keep the talking to a minimum.  He likes his quiet.

So while you in Taichung recover from Soul Survivor and we in Toronto recover from a hectic NXNE weekend, I give you some chilled out-ness.

A short film by Tom Mankovsky.  This thing is visually stunning and I can only assume took FOREVER to make.  Please soak this completely in for all its glory.

Sorry I’m Late.

Asher Roth puts it down for his pops and pops’ everywhere.  With this, he has the potential to be to Dads what Pac was to Moms.

Asher Roth – His Dream

And finally, on Friday, the Graffiti world lost their own father figure.  IZ the Wiz, once one of the reigning All City kings of NYC in the 70’s passed away due to kidney failure.  Probably best known for his appearance in Style Wars, IZ  was one of the first guys to try and combine quantity with quality and took mass bombing to a whole other level.  I leave you with his last appearance on camera.

R.I.P. IZ THE WIZ

Happy Baba’s Day.

Be good to yours. I’m bout to go call mine.

Word up.

HHHTerrorists,

I know it’s Sunday.

And I know this is generally your day of rest….but I just couldn’t wait another day to give you this sneak peek.

You know how as a kid you used to make up fantasy posse cuts?   Like I know in my circle we’d come up with combinations like Pharoahe Monch, Del and Big Boi, or Black Thought, Aesop Rock and Kurupt.  Y’know, ish like that.  Hell, N.E.R.D. actually did one of mine when they put together De La, Q-Tip, Mos and Common for their She Wants to Move remix.  Well….how bout this one.

Raekwon – Ill Figures Feat. M.O.P. and Kool G Rap (sorry it’s the Clean version.  I’m working on gettin the DIRTY!)

And as a bonus, the Ante Up (Remix) roster returns with another offering.

M.O.P. – Blow the Horns feat. Busta Rhymes (Dirty)

And to continue with the theme, Raekwon just released video version #2 of the New Wu track featuring Meth and Ghost.  I’m not sure why he did another version cause Ghost isn’t even in it, plus the RZA cameo (as well as a ton of others) isn’t there.  Instead they grabbed cameos from cats like Teyana Taylor?   Oh well….the tune’s still heavy.

Finally, on a completely unrelated note…..courtesy the homie Rewind from The Intelligentlemen….

So pitted.

Enjoy the day people.  Soak it up.

HHHTroops,

Last week I started on the topic of cats who were over saturating blogs and the market with just a little too much low-effort face time and well, when talking about that type of dude one definitely has to reference Charles Hamilton.

Now I know months back I gave this guy my endorsement, and as an emcee, I still do.  However, that being said, homie releases a lot of motionless tunes that just start and end nowhere.  And I don’t care how much material you record and how much time you spend sharpening your skills…practicing in public is lame and due to this fact, I haven’t posted anything C-Ham related in quite some time…until now.

MC LYTE! Need I say more??  Word on the street is these 2 NY reps’ll be putting out an EP together, tentatively titled ‘Fluorescent’ and if that’s true…hats off to Sonic for havin some taste and respect.  Now if 50 will only give Milk the cheque he deserves for ‘I Got Money’, we’ll be one step closer to goodness. Anyway, check the chunage.

Charles Hamilton & MC Lyte – New York City Girl

Also involved with that rant last week was the almighty Wu chef, Raekwon.

Yes, I still stand by my statement, and yes, I’m not as excited as I once was about OB4CL2, but gosh darn if this doesn’t get me a little amped.  3 dudes that you just don’t wanna beef with…check the gravy.

Jadakiss – Cartel Gathering feat. Ghostface & Raekwon

And finally, in commemoration of the day.  Some throwback footage of Dilla talkin about how Jaylib came to be.  Turn it up.

Salute homie.

To say its been a minute would be an understatement. I’ve been selfish these last few weeks, not sharing any goodies with the HHHT squad. To tell you the truth, I’ve been SERIOUSLY uninspired by music that is coming out and music that is being played out in clubs. If you want to know what I’ve been listening to, its been Drake’s ‘So Far Gone’ Mixtape/LP and soul music. That’s been my inspiration. So Far Gone is a couple months old but it still hits like the freshest shit my ears have been blessed with. Great rhymes spit with style and the right touch of swag. And Soul music is just timeless and makes me smile. Nothing better than listening to some good soul tunes on a chill day.

I know I haven’t been up on the blog for a bit. My homey Triple has been holding it down like Bundy with the 5 count. Good looks and salutes from across the pond thun. PPF I see you. HHHT’ers lets inject some anarchy into a lifeless system. I’m open to suggestions.

On to joints.

I love this pic because Michael looks like the one with the most swagger, next to the Big Dog Joe in the back of course. A leg up and a little attitude. Who knew then, that kid would turn into a fucking weirdo??

Its Great To Be Here – Jackson 5 (click pic)

Next up my homey, the Reverend Al Green. This guy had amazing hair and an amazing voice to go with it. Fans of hiphop should recognize the opening drums.

Al Green – Im So Glad Your Mine (click pic)

This one is dedicated to Triple for all his hard work these past couple weeks. Tim Hortons thun! (Inside joke for my Canadians)

This last one is for the ladies. There’s a big surprise in the middle of this one. (I bet you thought it was all Alicia.wink)

Enjoy your Sunday.
More Treats to Come
CAP

HHHTerminators,

Generally on Sundays, the crew and I give you the option of Heaven or Hell (or neither, depending on the preceding night).  And well, normally I’m cool with those guidelines…however, where I’m at, we’re gettin Monday off so Sunday will continue BANGIN (more on that in a minute) so I’m leanin towards the hellish side of this post.  Nonetheless, I can’t be insensitive to my overseas counterparts who are currently dealing with a serious dose of Adventure from the Grandmaster himself.

So, here we go….somethin for column A and somethin for column B.

Heaven: For those that need to just chill the eff out with some cool ish.

As many of you know, Pete Rock and Ma Dukes have gotten together to release Dilla‘s first official (I don’t count the Illa J ish) Posthumous record.  With enough in his vault to battle 2Pac, I really hope that this isn’t the beginning of a long watering down process.  Already on the record, titled JAY STAY PAID, there are features that I’m just not comfortable with (Havoc of Mobb Deep?!?  I say NO DICE good sir.), but that being said, there are some features on here that just look amazing (Blu, Lil Fame, Black Thought).  So with that, I give you a preview of the record courtesy the World Famous Beat Junkies & Okayplayer.

Beat Junkies & J Dilla – Jay Stay Paid Album Sampler

And as a little bonus, here’s some newer ish from J Dilla’s fam and Aftermath’s newest songstress.

Slum Village – Cloud 9 (Feat. Marsha Ambrosius)

HELL: For those who feel like using Red matter tonight.

As we’ve been reporting for awhile, Freebass 808 is the ridiculous union of producer Apple Juice kid and Camp Lo’s Geechi Suede.  They’re dope.  Now, with what they’re calling an ‘Interactive Player’, these boys along with Tishaun Dawson of Battalion Armour are here to take things one step further.   5 New Freebass 808 tunes accompanied by full conceptual visuals…this is the future and I’m excited.

WATCH/LISTEN TO IT HERE

And as an added bonus, like I said in the last post, Kurupt‘s a beast.  And if you know me, you know I love myself some DJ Quik.  So to put the 2 together…..well, gosh darn if it isn’t just OBSCENE!

The first single off the upcoming BLAKQOUT album.  Some of the most inventive song structuring ever…not to mention the cadences….oh LORD!

For the homies in T.O. — It’s tonight.  Invite only.  PPF gettin their VIP on.   Let’s get it.

I guess it was only a matter of time before someone went and did it. This is a CD turntable, you put the tonearm directly on the CD. This kinda takes CDJ’s to a whole new level. Kinda. Noise Addicts did a small article on the guy who invented it, and there are more pics. Click the pic.

I just peeped this on Hypebeast. Mick Boogie, Terry Urban going on a tour of the new 6453 TPE space. Peep it if you haven’t seen it yet, or just head down to the Zhongxiao/Dunhua area.

Sunday Sunday….
CAP

…is one of my favorite songs. A good friend of mine gave me a Best of Otis Redding double LP for my birthday one year. It happened to be the same year that I left Canada for a teaching job in South Korea. ‘Change is gonna come’ was a very inspirational song for me back then, I was looking for a big change to occur and I got one of the biggest changes in my life.

Anyways I keep hoping for some change to occur in the club scene out here in Taipei. Im about to editorialize a little bit. Where doe’s a person who actually loves music go to hear something outside of the usual playlist in Taipei clubs???

I’m a little bit spoiled because I’m from Toronto, we get good international DJ’s on the regular and the local DJ’s are awesome and really competitive. Not competitive in terms of cutting and scratching competitive, but more in terms of ‘I got some shit that’s gonna blow your mind musically’ competitive.

I feel like i’ve been to every club in this city and i’ve yet to see a local DJ blow my mind in terms of his selection. One local has come close, DJ Chicano, but he doesnt play out regularly and he only plays vinyl, so I’m waiting for him to make the changeover to serato.

Some of the craziest parties I’ve witnessed have been watching ?uestlove(from the Roots) DJ in Toronto and seeing the whole crowd go crazy to every song he was playing, from soul to r&b to hiphop to funk and beyond. I remember he played ‘seven nation army’ that night. That song had just come out, and that moment was probably the highlight of the night for me, watching a room full of people getting wild to this rock song. Then seeing Jay Dilla absolutely murder a club in TO, bottles broke, it was crazy. Watching Keb Darge murdering Soul 45’s in a dancehall style was awesome, and the crowd reaction to each song was amazing. Pete Rock, rocking out a concert venue, I know some people got hit in the head that night from arms flying into the air at every song. Listening to Masters at Work (Louis Vega and Kenny Dope) at a waterside venue, playing some ‘quality’ house. Watching Richie Hawtin play a rave in TO was ridiculous.

My point being, people out here equate a crazy party with just getting drunk and spending a lot of money. Popping 3 bottles = crazy party for most. Breaking 3 bottles = crazy party for me. My definition of a crazy party is a little different. It definitely involves good music and a good crowd and I’m no prude, so of course it needs a touch of alcohol. I know Taipei or Asia more specifically (save for Japan) has a young scene, I get that part. But everything grows old and everything must change.

I don’t want to turn this into a personal bitching session, I’m just upset that I went out on a Wednesday night, just for the sake of going out, and the playlist in the clubs hasn’t changed. I heard the same songs that I’ve been hearing(many that I can’t stand) and that upset me. It upset me because the crowd was still dancing to it like it was the shit and it upset me that the DJ was still playing it.

Again, I’m spoiled because I’m from a city that will boo and throw shit at the DJ if he or she sucks. Toronto is known as the ScrewFace capital. Its a tough crowd to get moving. Like I said our local guys are good, so if you come in as a headliner and your not playing better than the locals, you will get boo’d and most likely bottled too. But if a DJ can win over a TO crowd, that DJ will be shown love in a big way, all night. We fight hard, but we play hard too.

Maybe that’s my own fatal flaw, that I crave variety in my life. I can’t go to the same club every week to see the same people(in different clothes) and hear the same music in the same order. I have a girl, and I’m not going to hear new music, so why am I still going out to clubs in Taipei?

Maybe I should just stop going out to Taipei clubs unless a headliner is in town? Maybe someone who knows someone, who knows somebody can tell somebody to try and switch it up and grow the scene a little. Maybe I should drink a nice tall glass of ‘shut the f*#k up!’ and call it a day since:
1.its not my city
2.not my scene and
3.locals dont care what a Wai-guo-ren thinks about it anyways.

Soooo, on this Heaven or Hell Sunday, I give you a little piece of my heaven. Like I was saying, ‘A change is gonna come’ is one of my favorite songs. So I’m gonna give you two versions by two of the greatest voices in Soul Music.

First up Sam Cooke’s version(click pic to download)

2nd up, the Otis Redding version (my fav)click pic.

While we’re on the topic of change, I came across this earlier this week. A man whose face has gone through some MAJOR changes over the years. Michael Jackson. This is the demo version of P.Y.T. and its like a completely different song, but still funky as ever.

Sometimes major changes just need a little catalyst, a little something to peak peoples interests. Hopefully Wednesday April 8th when the new Nike 6453 gallery space opens, it will be a catalyst for change on some level. I got some sneak preview pics that I stole off the freshness blog.

If you don’t know about Wednesday night, please get familiar. The Commissioner aka Mick Boogie, will be in Taipei City. He will be at the gallery space opening as well as the after party at Primo. Check out his website, and his blog. He knows good music, and he’s worked with all your favorite artists. Trust it.

‘A change is gonna come…..oh yes it is……’

There’s also your’s truly running some Soul Food on Fridays at PS Underground from 8-1030pm. Come through during dinner time and hear some good music. Also the lasagna is absolutely amazing. Im a big lasagna fan and I’ve been disappointed on more than one occasion with the pithy filth they’ve tried to pander off as lasagna at other restaurants. The lasagna at PS is spot on good. Proper layers of meat, cheese and pasta, as lasagna should be made. The music is decent on Fridays from 8-1030pm too.

marvingaye-copyPS Underground is located at:

B1, #37, Lane 187, Dunhua South road (Donchu area) 敦化南路187巷37號B1(東區)

The party you all know and love is about to hit 10 events. We got something special in store for HHHT9 & 10. Stay tuned. More info to come real soon.

Nike is opening a gallery space called 6453 in Taipei City on April 8th. Mick ‘The Commissioner’ Boogie will be blessing the opening space party and the after party which is going to be held at Primo. You also may see a couple members of the HHHT squad making a special appearance at the gallery opening party.

I gave you guys a heads up on 88Keys a couple months back. Seems that his album ‘The Death of Adam’ is doing pretty well and he’s released the video for the track ‘Stay Up.(Viagra)’ featuring the man of the moment Kanye West.

Well HHHTwitters,

As I sit here still in sub zero weather (It’s the effin end of March — What the hell!?), I can only dream about the beauty that is Taiwanese Spring:  Hot, but not too hot.  Shorts for the boys, panty sized denim for the girls.  Xue Hua Bing and 7-11 crawls.  It truly is Waakao!

And while I have to unfortunately miss out on all the goodness my oral and ocular cavities would be exposed too (not to mention HHHT’s 7 AND 8 AND Soul Food Fridays — Damn Homie) I take comfort in the fact that the crew continues to demolish your calves and shins with the very best.

So, to ensure everyone’s getting their daily dose of goodies, here’s another small stockpile to tide you over.

Peter, Bjorn & John – Nothing to Worry About (Troublemaker Remix)

Ghostface & Doom (f.k.a. MF Doom f.k.a. Zev Love X) – Chinatown Wars

Original

Remix

And simply….dopeness from Mos — I was waitin for this.

Mos Def – Brooklyn (Go Hard)

Finally, some potential for dopeness (and even bigger potential for garbage), N.W.A. might be getting silver screen love.  Check it:

“Rap is finally getting the Ray treatment. New Line is developing Straight Outta Compton, an urban drama about N.W.A. (a.k.a. N-ggaz With Attitude), the hip hop group that helped pioneer the gangsta rap movement in the ’80s and early ’90s. The project will chronicle the rise and fall of the rap quartet, founded by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and MC Ren, whose songs were so incendiary (i.e. “F— tha Police”) they were banned from radio playlists but still sold millions of albums. Then came the inevitable fiery breakup, a grudge match between the former bandmates, and Eazy-E’s tragic death due to AIDS. The film’s producers, which include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E’s widow), and Circle of Confusion entertainment, are now actively searching for a director along the lines of Curtis Hanson (8 Mile).”

I dunnooooo……

Rest people. We get it in.
