HHHTowards the Right (Geographically, not politically),

In the last decade, the once dominant East Coast (Home of everyone from De La Soul to the Notorious B.I.G., the Juice Crew to the Wu-Tang Clan) have struggled to stay on top of the rap food chain as their necessity for cadence and concept has been dwarfed by the Souths ever infectious ‘Bounce’ and ‘Hook’ approach.  And well, while living legends Jay-Z and Nas still continue to dominate whenever they appear, the notion of a new East Coast dynasty remains myth like Lebron’s Championship ring.

However, as an over obsessive rap Stan, I’ve noticed something this year that has somehow slipped under the mainstream media’s radar…THE EAST IS BACK! Now I won’t go so far as to say a new Dynasty is on the horizon because quite frankly, outside of a handful of artists, the East is still selling less than the South.  But for those who just love themselves some East Coast ish, 2009’s been good to you!

Lemme break it down:

  • Jadakiss pushed 100,000 his first week.
  • Mos Def had in my opinion (and Diddy’s apparently), the best album of the year – PRETTY DANCER’S MY SHIT!
  • Fabolous, although coming with less than stellar singles, actually had his best album yet (check Pachanga).
  • Wu-Tang CAME (and left again).
  • De La Soul celebrated their 20th anniversary with an incredible tour (yes I was there and yes it was the best I’ve ever seen them).
  • Busta stayed relevant.
  • Q-Tip released (and re-released) 2 ridiculous records!
  • Drake is hotter than fresh caca outta Dumbo.
  • Slaughterhouse‘s Joe Budden and Joell Ortiz continue to spit crazy bars.
  • KRS-One and Buckshot proved they can still punch with the best of’em.
  • Meth & Red stayed INTERNATIONAL!
  • Raekwon & Ghost both released excellent albums as well as confirmed an upcoming trio record with Meth.
  • And finally, Jay came back and made up for that black eye known as Kingdom Come.

Well, to add to this nice list of 2009 accomplishments, how bout a few more goodies that slid across my desktop this past week (and a few that came out during the HHHT hiatus).

Styles P. feat. Jadakiss & Junior Reid – Invasion

Jadakiss & Rakim – Euphoria (w/ Tags unfortunately)

I’m feelin good people.  Get to my level.

HHHT, we off that.

I hate saying its been a minute, so lets not state the obvious. Life is like a box of chocolate, sometimes you put it in the fridge and let it cool for a minute. Without further ado, lets get to the goods.

Its 4th quarter and much like Pat Riley and the Knicks, the music industry is always on some ‘own the 4th’ type shit. They usually put out a bunch of releases in anticipation of blazing Christmas sales. So the month of September has blessed us with releases from elder statesman Jay-z, Wu veteran Raekwon, Drake dropped the retail release of ‘So Far Gone’ and hipster-hopper Kid Cudi released his debut also.

For this post, I’m gonna focus on 2 of those 4. My hometown(Toronto) hero Drizzy and the reigning King of NY, Jigga that knee grow. Both have been covered extensively on the net in the last few weeks, Jay was on the cover of XXL, and Drizzy was on the cover of The Fader (which has launched many a career with a cover shot:Movado, Kanye, Santogold, TVOTR, etc)

Click the cover for the article

And the Jigga man gets full frontal on XXL

In my recent internet trollings, I came across this little ditty about how Jay’s cover came together.

And my last offering from the Jigga man. Concert footage from the 9/11 show in New York. This show is awesome, he performs hits from the new album. Kid Cudi, Kanye, Rihanna, Santogold, Pharrell and Memphis all show up alongside the 5 boroughs of the big apple. Jay has a true grip and stronghold on that city. Check for yourself.

We off that.

HHHThree in the mornin’,

Apologies for the lack of updates.  I’ve been caught in a whirlwind of promo for my upcoming TOUR (15 cities cross Canada! Come see us!!!) and haven’t really had time to keep you up with all the happenings of recent.

Well, in the past little bit, I’ve seen such an incredible slew of videos (good, bad and WTF?!) that I thought I’d just post a few of’em each day for the next little while until I get some time to really pump some ish out.  Those who’re regular on the blog circuit might notice that some of these are a few weeks old but for those who haven’t, enjoy.

The Good

The Roots – How I Got Over (sorry wasn’t able to embed.  Twitvid is being a b.i.  Click pic)

The Bad (as in M.J. Bad)

Jay-Z  – D.O.A.

Hurricane Chris – Halle Berry (Live for the Louisiana House of Representatives)

And as a BONUS MPFREE, some new Sa-Ra featuring the lovely miss Erykah Badu. – click pic.

Be well world.

HHHTerry Benedicts’,

No pussy footin.  Let’s get it in.

Remember what happened to throwbacks after Jay and Pharrell did ‘Change Clothes’?  Let’s hope and pray that Jay still bares the same clout as he once did and allows the few T-Pain’s to ride their lane out and remind everyone else to stay OUT of it.

This tune is retarded….not cause of any particular flow but just for the sake of the message.  And c’mon….NO I.D. ON THE TRACK!!!!  Hands up to Jay and Kanye for keeping a legend working and relevant and acknowledging their roots.  At no point should anyone forget what this man’s done for Hip-Hop.*

*….and if you don’t know….go cop yourself Common’s 1994 joint ‘Ressurection’ for some education.  And after that, grab the NO I.D. & Dug Infinite joint from ’97 – (super rare collector’s item for diggers everywhere).

Anyway, no more nothin!  Song and interview.  Get IT!

Jay-Z – D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)

Q-Tip on Auto-Tune (sorry…couldn’t figure out the embed)

Bobby Ray on Auto-Tune

And a final reminder that it only takes one to start a revolution.  WATCH THE WHOLE THING!

Be well world.

It’s Saturday Folk. Get it in!

Triple. – Day 5 of the PPFilm Festival happening now!

I’ve been away.

Well actually…I still am.

And unfortunately, because of this, I haven’t been able to offer the crew the support they so readily deserve with their hectic schedules (see: Waakao,  Soul Food Fridays @ PS Underground, Shuffle Wednesdays @ Copa and anything that has HHHT on it).

So, as of today, after a 2 month hiatus, I’m back like Demond Wilson and ready to get it in.

First up how bout Jigga doin Diddy (ayo/no homo/pause/whatever they’re sayin nowadays).

As you all know, Diddy has a thing for wanting to make hit records.  And him being the intelligent business man that he is, knows that he can’t write a rap for shit.  Soooo….why not just spend that business man money and get a business….maaan!  A Jay-Z & Diddy tune that apparently is ghostwritten for Diddy, but the scratch vocals have Jay referencing Jay, so I’m confused.  Anyway, check it…

JAY-Z (or Diddy?) – MAYBE (snippet)

Next up, Camp Lo.

I love’em.  Absolutely.

I hate the word Swagger.  I really do.

Sure there are a few dope tunes fashioned around this word, but as an overall, its been misappropriated and as a result…teabag.   HOWEVER, if anyone completely and wholeheartedly embodies the word swagger, it’s the Geechie Gracious and Sonny Cheeba. No question.

New ish.

And finally (for MPFrees), the official return of Reflection Eternal. (YAAAAAAY!!!) I know this vid was released last month but I just got my hands on the CDQ MPFree so for you, I give you a double sided goodie like Motown 45’s.

Reflection Eternal – Back Again

Quick question.  Like Wax?  Got an iPod touch? (this is ridiculous…hit up the video — sorry don’t know how to embed Vimeo yet.  Cap? Marcus?)

Soul Food Friday’s tonight folk.  Get’em Cappy.

Word up Taiwan.
Be well world.
See you soon.

Came across these in my internet trollings this morning. Both vids are absolutely ridiculous for obvious and different reasons.

First up Jigga man and The Roots. One of the best emcees with one of the best live bands. This shit is ridiculous.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

more about “Ridiculous“, posted with vodpod

My homey Bobby Bonestorm has been trying to send me this ridiculousness for a while. Remember how you felt when you first were introduced to Borat. Ladies and Gentlemen, for your viewing pleasure, I present. the latest incarnation from Sacha Baron Cohen, Bruno. Watch it quick, cause it might get taken down soon.

Absolutely ridiculous.

The sun is out, peace.

Mick Boogie next Wednesday.

Quick question, what’s worse?  Video game anger? or Computer anger? Are they the same?

Like, by worse I mean the most infuriating because you can’t actually argue with either and yet, when they’re uncooperative, they manage to stir up more malice and animosity within you than any sibling ever has. Or maybe that’s just me.

All I know is, if I was rich, I’d probably be on my 34th computer right now as the rest lay in a computer graveyard out my top floor window.  But I digress, after having some issues with my internet yesterday, I’m back in full effect with plenty of goodies for this Free-For-All Friday.

You like Wu-Tang?  I like Wu-Tang.  You like GZA?  I also like GZA.  Here’s some GZA.

GZA – Seven Pounds (remix) (click flick)

How bout Jay-Z?  Here’s all his new stuff since American Gangster in one neat little package.

Jay-Z – Prelude to Blueprint 3 (click flick)

And how ’bout Shepard Fairey? The man once known for being behind the Obey campaign is now synonymous with Mr. 44 and change due to his instantly iconic Obama pic — that’s poised to be the next Photobooth default setting next to the Warhol one….(incidentally, I went to the Andy Warhol exhibit here in Taipei yesterday and well….I think I hate him. (click for more)

Anyways…here’s Shepard Fairey talkin bout his Obama flick with Boing Boing.

Stay tuned for a very special Dilla Birthday post tomorrow.

Salut mes Amis,

The following artists need no introductions. And if you require one, I insist you go buy yourself some good ol’ fashioned COM-PACT DISQUES.

Classic bon bons for that Ol’ Skool lovin palette of yours.

Q-Tip, circa ’98 when he was forced (much like Prince, but less publicly), to change his name due to contract issues.  This just recently surfaced and is what some heads like to call, DOPE!

The Lone Ranger (Q-Tip’s alter Ego) – It’s Yours (prod. by Q-Tip)

If you heard these before then you are TRULY a 12″ master (and I ain’t talkin John Holmes – Hiyoooooooooo — yes I went there.  Deal with it.)  I’m not sure who originally posted this, but I got it from the good folks at Soul Sides.

Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo – I Declare War
Craig G. – Drop A Bomb On’em

Finally, a baby Shawn Carter brandishin his skills on this ol’ dusty demo tape.

Jay-Z – Pass the Roc

And as a final bonus (and completely unrelated), something that had me chuckling pretty heavy.

So my Neighbours president is Black.

I say my neighbour’s because I’m Canadian and well, unfortunately we’re still stuck with Bush’s Mini-me, Stephen Harper, who you may know for this wonderful sentiment: “Ordinary folks don’t care about arts.”

But I digress, today’s post is not about complaining but about celebrating, celebrating something so big, so monumentous, so stupendous, so…….ha, just kidding.  You know why Obama’s awesome.

Here’re some other people to let you know why he’s awesome.

Jay-Smooth:  The Illdoctrine. – This is money right here.  Always money.

Jay-Z – My President is Black (Remix)

Click flick for DL

Daft Punk vs. Adam Freeland – Aer Obama: A weird stop motion-mash-tribute to Mr. 44.

And Finally, a short goodbye to Mr. 43 from Canada’s own bad boy of media, George Stroumboulopoulos.

Be sure to check CAP’s post below for some extra laughs and goodness.

We’re back in effect people.  Get with it.

Gangstas and Gangsterettes,

I bring you news of G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) sightings.

First off….something from the most recent person to claim the title of G.O.A.T., Li’l Weezy Wee gettin his Don LaFontaine on for Gatorade’s new ad campaign.  Maybe instead of Sprite, Wayne’ll start mixing his codeine with Gatorade now.

Second…something from Weezy Goldberg’s on-again/off-again Idol (depending on Sizzurp intake) paired with the G.O.A.T. from another world.

I’m a huge fan of both these guys, but this idea is starting to get tired for me.  However, I’ve yet to listen to this so there’s always a chance for dopeness.

Jay-Z vs. Radiohead = Jaydiohead (Click Flick for DL)

…And lastly, the G.O.A.T. argument.

No, it’s not Marcus and I jousting over Dre vs. Dilla, or D’Angelo’s greatness….nono….some pure entertainment as Charles Hamilton, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″, DJ Enuff and a slew of entourage go at it over who the G.O.A.T. is.

I always loved these arguments.

  • HHHT3: NEXT SATURDAY, Jan. 10th in Taichung @ Light Lounge.
  • HHHT4:  Friday, Jan. 16th in Taipei @ 1981 Bar.
  • HHHT5:  Saturday, Jan. 17th in Kaohsiung @ The Pig & Whistle.

Have a great Saturday people.
